Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that the European Union is in the throes of a crisis brought about by two seemingly disparate factors: 1) A collapse in the real estate market, and 2) austerity measures that are hurting consumption. And now, the eurozone’s second-largest economy, Italy, has fallen into recession, despite the recent tightening of monetary policy by the European Central Bank.
So how does this situation affect your portfolio? It’s important to understand the current market trends in order to help you navigate the choppy waters that lie ahead. The stock market has been a strong performer for the last several years, both domestically and internationally. I spoke to BofA Merrill Lynch managing director and chief market strategist Michael Hartnett, who has compiled an in-depth analysis of the markets in a report titled “The Sovereign Debt Crisis: 2013”.
In this report, Hartnett analyzed the current trends in the markets, the impact of the European crisis on the global economy, and why investors should avoid assets that have traditionally been considered havens during crises. He also used his expert knowledge of the technical analysis to identify what he believes are key market turning points for the remainder of the year. Here are some of the highlights of his report.
Three Reasons to Invest in Europe
1) Economic growth in Europe will pick up in the third quarter, as Hartnett writes that “the better than expected growth of the Eurozone economy in the second quarter was a relief to markets that was not to last long.”
